Join The Night Writer Society on April 5, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM for an evening workshop of writing inspired by scent. This is not your grandma’s scent workshop: perfumer Yosh Han and travel and food writer Alison Bing will reactivate taste and smell in modern writing, ridding you of olfactory clichés and re-teaching you how to write with the senses.

Each event in this brand new Night Writer Society series is special; you’ll have time to enjoy wine and mingle with other local writers and literary enthusiasts, and more and more secrets of the quirky Night Writer Society will be revealed to you.

We’re also pleased that Almanac Beer will be our official beer sponsor for the series, which means that you’ll be able to enjoy a delicious San Francisco beer while you learn about a new craft!

And, as always, all proceeds from these events benefit 826 Valencia’s free student programs.

These comics are a treat.

“An Upsetting Halloween” by Eton Shon

An untitled strip by Chloe Kim

Halloween might have just ended, but at 826 we’re still enjoying these spooky and silly Halloween comics straight out of our latest workshop by award-winning comic artist Emma T. Capps.

For two Saturdays, Emma led a class of nine students, teaching them how to brainstorm, design, and draw four-part comic strips based on their experiences of Halloween. The students developed characters, wrote creepy dialogue, and practiced their illustrating skills. Students left with inked, lettered, and colorful comics to share with their friends. Hope you didn’t get tricked like the trick-or-treaters in these strips!

Here’s what happened in June: I taught a class of 9-11 year-olds at 826 Valencia how to put a favorite family recipe together on paper (and the following week we had a potluck with all the dishes they came up with). I was terrified and don’t remember much, but I look fairly confident in the photo, so must have done okay.

Celia Sack of Omnivore Books on her workshop. You did a great job, Celia. That book looks amazing.

Here at 826 Valencia, we know that you can’t get any good swashbuckling done on an empty stomach. In 826 Recipe Wars, we combined our love of food with the thing we do best—make books—and came out with our latest cookbook, A Recipe to Remember!

Celia Sack, owner of Noe Valley cookbook store Omnivore Books, lent her expertise to twelve students interested in sharing their favorite recipes with a wider audience. For the workshop, each student brought in a recipe of personal significance and wrote down a memory attached to his or her dish. From Minecraft and Harry Potter to picking blackberries, students explored the connections between food and memories and personalized their recipes with hand-drawn artwork.

826 Recipe Wars culminated in a celebratory potluck where students brought in the dishes that they had written about. We sampled shrimp spring rolls, sparkling lemonade, pancit, chicken stir fry, and lemon mousse, to name a few. After stuffing ourselves silly, each participant took home an Omnivore Books Recipe Keeper (courtesy of Celia) and a copy of A Recipe to Remember. If you’d like a copy of this cookbook, you can pick one up in the Pirate Store!

Dandelion Chocolate » Chock-full o’ Chocolate

Mmm, if you’re like me, you crave chocolate as soon as you read the word. The sweet people at Dandelion Chocolate are teaching a workshop right now at 826 Valencia, and the lucky kids in the class get to write about, think about, and (obviously) EAT CHOCOLATE. This really, really, tasty chocolate that Dandelion will soon be making just down the street from us on Valencia.

We are super excited for the chapbook they’ll release at the end of summer and for them to be our new neighbors.
