Today we released the latest issue of Slick Magazine, James Lick Middle School’s one-and-only lifestyle magazine. We’ve had so much fun working with the students throughout the semester, and we were excited to see just how much they’d progressed on their articles. Students, tutors, and teachers from the school gathered for a reading and pizza party in celebration on the magazine.

Congrats to all the students on their hard work, and thank you to the tutors and teachers for your dedication to the project. It’s hard to believe another school year is coming to a close!

Hot off the press! The Enter Question

This Friday, the eighty-three student authors of The Enter Question: How to Ask and How to Answer, will celebrate the release of their 300-page anthology with 826 Valencia. The Enter Question is the product of 826 Valencia’s Young Authors’ Book Project, for which we partner with a different San Francisco high school each year.

For an entire semester, eleventh graders at San Francisco International High School worked with 826 Valencia tutors as they wrote, revised, and shaped a collection from their essays. On Friday, they will hold them in their hands in book form for the very first time.

SFIHS is a high school specially designed for students who have recently immigrated to the United States, and the essays in The Enter Question cover a wide variety of topics including the challenges of communicating in a new language, the courage it takes to ask for help, and the joy in meeting new people from all over the world.

You will be able to pick up a copy of The Enter Question in the Pirate Supply Store after the release of the book on Friday, and they’ll be available online soon afterward!

On Sunday, May 12th, 2013, I taught my first Mind Mapping class to a group of eleven 11-13 year olds! It was AWESOME! They came up with some crazy Mind Maps and I was so proud! “Map Your Mind” is a two hour/ two week course at 826 Valencia!
